Statement by Rennise Ferrario, Executive Director
The Housing Authority of the County
of Merced is situated in the beautiful San Joaquin Valley
of California. The city of Merced is approximately two
hours by car from both the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range
to the East, which boasts Yosemite National Park, and
the Pacific Ocean with miles of awesome beaches to the
West.
Merced County enjoys a culturally
varied and growing population of some 218,000. The city
supports and benefits from UC Merced, a modern community college,
many schools and churches, a variety of recreational
facilities, including 12 miles of class one bike paths,
29 tree-shaded parks, many theaters and Yosemite Lake
for picnic and water sport enthusiasts.
Agriculture comprises the main
source of revenue for Merced County. In commercial quantities,
some 92 crops are grown here, including poultry, tomatoes,
almonds, alfalfa hay and sweet potatoes. In 2001, the
gross value of agricultural products was over $1.6 billion,
with the greatest generator of revenue being milk and
dairy products from the countys 450 commercial
dairies. Merced County has worked diligently to build
upon its long and proud history as an agricultural leader
and has sought in recent years to diversify its economy
through an expanding tourist trade and light industry
geared to agriculture-related products. Additionally,
many other types of businesses including recreational
boat manufacturers, automobile dealerships, and major
communication companies are prospering in Merced County.
The agency has been providing quality
housing for the citizens of Merced County since 1942.
Over the years, the organization has grown and developed
to meet the changing needs of its residents. Today,
we are providing not only housing assistance, but also
job training for residents and educational programs
such as Club Live, 4-H, GED, ESL and computer skills for the youth
of the community. Much of these activities are housed
in the John O'Banion Learning Center, a landmark
community collaborative in the Merced area. The Housing Authority
has also developed a unique partnership between itself
and two affiliate Non-Profits known as the Central Valley
Coalition for Affordable Housing, and Firm Build.
As you travel throughout the Housing
Authoritys web site, you will have the opportunity
to view both our Housing Authority and our community.
I hope this new service helps to communicate the level
of our commitment and I welcome any questions or comments
you may have.
